This study highlights and analyzes the modal elements present in the music recorded by Miles Davis in 1957 for the soundtrack of the French film Ascenseur pour l'échafaud. This recording represents a pivotal point in Davis's transition from a traditional be-bop style to a more modern and innovative modal sonority. Bassist, composer and arranger Pierre Michelot was born in St. Denis, France on March 3, 1928. He studied double bass from the age of sixteen and piano from the age of seven. Between 1948 and the late 1950s he collaborated in both studio and live sessions with such legendary musicians as Stephane Grappelli, Don Byas, Coleman Hawkins, John Lewis, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, and Bud Powell, and Kenny Clarke. In 1953 he was a steady member of theDjango Reinhardt Orchestra.  Since 1960 Pierre Michelot has recorded with the Humair, Urtreger, Michelot Trio, Bud Powell (“Portrait of T. Monk”, CBS 1961), Dexter Gordon (“Our Man in Paris”, Blue Note 1063), Hampton Haves and Martial Solal (“Key for 2”, BYG 1968). In 1963 he recorded his first album as a leader, entitled “Round about a Bass” (Fontana).
